Smart Growth Ogden Saturday Bench Hikes

Smart Growth Ogden, a local community organization, best known for the opposition to the Ogden gondola concept and east bench development, is providing guided hikes along Ogden’s east bench trail system. For more information - visit their website. Ogden’s east bench is the home to a great number of trails that provide easy accessible hiking as well as some very scenic areas including, Waterfall Canyon Trail, Malan’s Basin Trail, Taylor Canyon Trail, Bues Canyon Trail, and the Indian Trail.

Regardless of your position on the current Ogden-Gondola issue, getting out and enjoying the local trails is a must do. Remember to bring plenty of water, dress appropriately and watch out for rattlesnakes which are common in the area.

The local east bench trails provide great hiking as well as excellent mountain biking. I believe that pets are welcome, but be sure to keep them on a leash, as I’ve heard reports of active policing and “tickets” for violators.

For a summary of local trails, visit Weber Pathways, and feel free to help contribute to our own collection of trail information (just getting started) on the Ogden Hub Wiki Guide.

I have heard reports that the hikes have been very informative and objective. If you are interested in getting more information about Ogdens great bench trails, or if you want to find out more from one perspective of the east bench development issues, these hikes might be very useful.

I was at the Mount Ogden neighborhood planning meeting tonight and was pleased to discover that that my neighbors find our trails to be the most important asset we have in our area.
